The Beach School, launched in the east end of Toronto in Fall 2003, is a student-directed school that models itself after the Sudbury Valley School, which has been in operation in Framingham, Massachusetts since 1968.

Meet a Beach School Student: Frances

Frances enrolled at The Beach School last September as one of its inaugural students. Before coming to The Beach School, she homeschooled with her family. She is eleven years old. Outside of school she enjoys gymnastics, swimming, playing the piano and being a Girl Guide.

I talked to Frances about her experiences at The Beach School so far. Here is what she told me about how she chooses to spend her time in this democratic environment:

Crossing the Threshold of Boredom

"I'm bored!" Why do these words make parents so nervous? Why do they make us feel the need to rush in and fill the vacuum? Because we have lost our faith in the capacity of children and young people to draw on their own inner wells, and I would suggest this is in part due to the fact that our own inner wells have gone dry. We've forgotten what freedom is, and we can no longer imagine its benefit for our children.

Life After a Sudbury Education-Mimsy Sadofsky To Speak About Sudbury Valley School Graduates

One of the most common questions asked about democratic education is, What happens to your graduates? Many people are intrigued by the idea of trusting students to create and fulfill their own educational goals, but worry about what will happen to these students when they move beyond the walls of their school. How will they succeed without a formal transcript, without grades, possibly without ever having taken a class? Will they be able to find satisfying jobs? Will they be able to pursue further education?
