The Beach School, launching in the east end of
Toronto in Fall 2003, is a student-directed school that models
itself after the Sudbury Valley School, which has been in
operation in Framingham, Massachusetts since 1968.

Update...The Beach School Welcomes the First TBS Kids!
Our first
enrolment push has ended with the successful registration of nine kids.
We welcome them all, and their families, and look forward to all of us
getting to know each other over the coming months.

Playing For
an Education: An Insiders View to Student Directed Learning

Sadofsky is a former Sudbury Valley School student, who spoke to an
audience of about 50 people in February on behalf of The Beach School.
These are her speaker notes.
I want to
start this evening with a bit of background for you all on why I am
presenting to you tonight. My name is Debra Sivia Sadofsky, (please call
me Sivia). I am a 39 year old professional in the high-tech industry, I
work as an e-learning implementation project manager for Sun
Microsystems, within their education division. I live here in Toronto
and have lived in Canada for about 18 years. I grew up mostly in the
suburbs of Boston, and I spent the majority of my primary and secondary
education years at The Sudbury Valley School in Framingham Massachusetts
- this is what I am here to discuss.

Education? Definitions, Debate, and Directions

The Beach School is
hosting a panel discussion on Thursday, June 5, at the University of
Toronto about
various aspects of education with the general theme "What is the purpose
of education?"
The participants on this panel represent a spectrum of perspectives and
experiences in education which will provide an interesting discussion
and debate around a number of issues including learning and learning
environments, how people process information and acquire skills and
knowledge.
Confirmed panellists
include John O'Leary, President of Frontier College, Wendy
Priesnitz, editor of Natural Life and Life Learning magazines and
Michael Reist, veteran separate school teacher.
