PERMANENT STAFF:
Anyone interested in being considered for a permanent position (either
paid or voluntary) must go through the following procedures:
STEP 1 - Required Reading
We ask all potential candidates to have a strong understanding of the
philosophy of education at The Beach School. As such, we require at
minimum that the following texts be read:
1. All information and Articles contained on The Beach School Website
2.
The Sudbury Valley School Experience* edited by Mimsy Sadofsky
and Daniel Greenberg
3.
Free At Last* by Daniel Greenberg
4.
Starting a Sudbury School* by Mimsy Sadofsky and Daniel
Greenberg
*Note: Potential Candidates are not expected to purchase these texts.
They may be borrowed from The Beach School with a refundable deposit for
each one.
STEP 2 - Letter of Introduction,
Resume, and Criminal Background Check
If candidates are confident of their knowledge and supportive of The Beach
School philosophy of education, then they are encouraged to submit a
Letter of Introduction and Resume (with three references). The
Letter of Introduction should include answers to the following questions:
1. What is it about this educational model that interests you?
2. What do you have to offer this school?
3. How would a student benefit from having you at the school?
Potential Candidates must also provide a copy of a
Criminal Background Check valid no longer than 12 months prior to the
date of submitting their Letter
of Introduction and Resume.
STEP 3 - Interview with Staffing
Committee
The Candidate will be contacted from someone on the Staffing Committee
for an interview. At this point Candidates are encouraged to visit
The Beach School before the Interview. The Candidates may contact
the school directly to set up a visiting day. The Staffing Committee
comprises of 3-5 members of the school community and the interview can
easily take 1-2 hours. After the interview is complete, the Staffing
Committee will make a recommendation to the School Meeting whether or not
to proceed to the next step.
STEP 4 - Internship
If the Candidate is recommended by the Staffing Committee and ratified at
The School Meeting, then the Candidate must undergo a voluntary Internship
of a minimum of 60 hours (usually 3 weeks of 20 hours each). The
School Meeting reserves the right to cancel the Internship at any time.
STEP 5 - Staff Elections
General Staff Elections are held prior to the Spring Assembly Meeting at
the end of the school year. If enrolment has reached a point where
another Staff is required and/or there is an immediate vacancy, then a
Vacancy Staff Election could be held anytime during the school year.
A Candidate must be nominated by a member of the School Meeting to be
considered for election. If nominated, Candidates will be given an
opportunity to make any comments about themselves and questions can be
asked of them by the School Meeting - including anonymously submitted
ones. After all Candidates have spoken, the Elections take place.
STEP 6 - Hiring
Once a Candidate has been successfully elected a Staff Member, any
remuneration is voted on at the Spring Assembly Meeting by all members of
The Beach School and is based on budgetary and enrolment constraints.
Hired Staff Members are also required to complete a
Standard
First Aid Basic Rescuer CPR Course paid by The Beach School, prior to
the start of work.
STEP 7 - Adult Role Model
Successful Candidates can now contribute to The Beach School as someone
who promotes life-long learning and is a positive adult role model for the
students. |
